THE BELIZE OF OLD

Think back to the Belize of old,
When summer was hot and December was cold.
Think back to the times of yesteryears,
When all our thoughts were clear of today’s fears.

What has changed as progress came to the land?
What has created so much suffering to the Belizean Man?
As we prospered did we forget to say thank you?
Did we not think that our remaining hours could be few?

Oh, this life we have moulded and fashioned,
When will we see that it only leads to destruction?
Gone is the 5 cents bread and the 10 cents milk,
Gone is the famous crinoline and the vests of silk,
Gone is the mule and cart and the river ferry,
Thank goodness we still have cashew wine and berry.

The struggle continues today as we try to succeed,
The green revolution continues as we plant each seed.
The things we want today are on lists too long,
And have become a part of the new Belize’s song.

So think back on the Belize that is forever gone,
And look forever to the Belize that comes with the dawn.
If we work together we can rebuild and grow,
With a new Belize of happiness and so much more.
